WI-FI in complete words means wireless Fidelity. It is a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) that connects many devices at the same time to allow the sharing of information. In 1997

Wi-Fi was invented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE). It was named 802.11 after a committee which was created that year. At that moment the link speed was at 2mbit/s, which was quite slow and many devices did not support it. Later on, in 1999, the 802.11b was developed and this had speeds of about 11Mbps. Still, in that same year, 802.11 was named Wi-Fi to conform to the normality of the users. As time passed, the signals and speeds were upgraded and in 2003 the link speed was higher than the previous versions. A boost in the speed brought about better routers that sent the radio waves farther in distance.

In 2003

The version that was present in 2002 was the 802.1g.it was a combination of all the features that 802.1a and 802.1b could offer. The bandwidth of 802.11g was 54 Mbps which worked on 2.4GHz of frequency.

In 2009

the final version of 802.1n was released out there. The speed and coverage of the radio waves had improved immensely. Theoretically, the bandwidth of the latest version of 802.11n was 300mbps which is quite fast and impressive. It proved to be more reliable than the predecessors since large volumes of data could be shared easily in a nick of time. Furthermore, 802.1a is another version which works at a 5GHz band and has a maximum net data rate of 54mbits/s. To add on that, this version operates with a standard data link layer protocol.


In 2013

The 802.1ac version was introduced. There were some implementations to bring about the support of 256 QAM, three spatial streams, and 80 MHz channels. Additionally, this version could support high speeds of up to 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Backward compatibility with the previous versions of 802.11g/h/n is another thrilling feature of this 802.11ac version.

As time went by, an amendment was approved to allow the usage IEEE 802.11af which is also known as “super Wi-Fi” or “White Wi-Fi”. This version can send bands between 54 MHz and 790 MHz. This is why it is widely used by television stations to transmit unused portions of TV channel Band allocation. When it comes to the link speed this version is pretty fast since it can accommodate 26.7Mbps on a 7MHz channel. On an 8 MHz channel, it works on a 35.6 Mbps link speed. It is important to note that this version can also operate on four spatial streams with four bonded Channels. In this state, the speed is different since the maximum data rate is about 426Mbps on 7MHZ and 568 on 8MHz channels.

In 2017

The latest version is the IEEE 802.11ah which was established in 2017. This version is also referred to as Wi-Fi HaLow. The bright side of this version is the less energy consumption advantage it offers. It operates on 900GHZ which is different from the predecessors which relied on 2.4GHz. The link speed of this IEEE’s version 802.11ah tops up to 347Mbps on a 16MHz channel with four spatial streams. On top of all that IEEE has worked on other technologies that boost and relate to Wi-Fi.

It seems that Wi-Fi pioneered and inspired the invention of other types of wireless network connectivity. Bluetooth which operates on short ranges especially with devices such as mobile phones falls almost in the same category as Wi-Fi but the bandwidth and coverage distance is short. With all that information about Wi-Fi, it will be very easy to identify and familiarize with 802.11. It will be easier to understand the different version which have been existing all along and which version has the best features.
